At this time of year we are bombarded with messages about transformation and change. We are encouraged to change our physical appearance, revamp our wardrobes, change our homes and book holidays.
All of this at the darkest time of the year, the time when every sensible animal, except for humans, knows to hunker down.
What would it look like for you to reject these messages? What would it look like to turn inward, to focus on the parts of yourself that need nurture and care?
For me it looks like keeping my fairy lights up and lighting candles when the afternoon gets dark. It feels like embracing the cold with frosty walks in the morning and then eating hot toast when I get home. It tastes like making slow cooked dishes for my family that bubble away for hours in the oven and eating them in our pyjamas.
There is no New You for the New Year, there is only you. A you that is probably a bit burnt out from the festive season, definitely a bit skint and undoubtedly longing for longer days. Take care of yourselves and embrace the rest where you can.
(If none of this relates to you and you are fired up and full of positivity to dry up your January, veganize your February and start Couch to 5K then I am happy for you and cheering you on from my armchair.)
